In other words, they want you to buy the official Dell stuff for 3x the price. That these proprietary powers supplies and adapters are also subject to breaking down easily and causing the computers to run slow doesn't bother them at all. In fact, it's probably a great marketing strategy to convince you to "upgrade" to the next "generation" (if you can call their warmed-over models that) of the Retardaron or whatever. See the Wiki entry:

Power supply issues

Most Dell laptop computers have a special external power supply (PSU) which cannot be replaced by a third-party universal supply. The PSU has a chip which produces a special signal identifying the PSU as by Dell and specifying its power, and a special 3-pin connector (minus, plus, and ID). If a power supply not made by Dell is used, and the cable near the connector becomes damaged as is not infrequent after some use, the battery stops charging and the CPU runs slower, although the computer can be used indefinitely so long as it remains plugged in. If this problem is present at startup the message "The AC power adapter type cannot be determined. Your system will operate slower and the battery will not charge" is displayed. This will continue until the external PSU is replaced. A few third-party suppliers make power supplies with specific provision for Dell computers at lower prices than Dell's. It is possible to work round the slowdown, but not the battery charging, by installing a CPU clock utility [14]. On some models (the 9100 for instance), the problem can be worked around by starting the computer without a battery installed and fitting the battery after the computer has booted.

Another problem arises after much use with the motherboard power connector; springy metal parts which contact the outside of the plug lose their springiness and fail to make contact so that power does not reach the computer. The "official" solution is to replace the connector on the motherboard, which requires partial disassembly of the computer and unsoldering of a part with several pins; many companies charge a considerable sum for the work involved. Various simple alternatives have been suggested; for example a thin "skin" of solder on the outside of the barrel of the connector on the PSU (with care not to overheat the connector's plastic parts; and this thickened connector should not be used with other, not faulty, Dells as it will stretch the springs).

These problems are discussed in detail, and solutions and workarounds suggested, in a discussion on the Tom's hardware site [15].

Inspiron 1521 running slow as hell with power cord plugged in

Well, it's been a couple years since I bought this machine and I can tell you it's been one ordeal after another. About 8 months into use, the machine start slowing down like you wouldn't believe (slower than my old desktop P2) just doing simple things such as viewing gmail or working in Microsoft Word. Sometimes it would just hang there for about 2 minutes while the little clock icon ticked annoyingly by. Clean installs of Windows doesn't work; neither vista nor 7.

I turned off Powernow! and turned on highest performance for the hard drive in BIOS, but the problems remains. This is a fairly well documented problem on the net, with some people suspecting CPU throttling when the CPU gets too hot (not an issue as I have a mains fan blowing right into the underside, and it's still slow as frozen syrup), use of bargain bin thermal paste, or some other issue.

This Inspiron 1521 is now out of warranty and my only recourse is to not buy Dell again in the future. $400 is not cheap when you have to deal with a 1-2 second lag for every character that you punch into the keyboard (like is happening right now as I type this blog post).

One other item that bugs me is the horrific static noise when I listen to music or try to record something with this laptop. Apparently, the designers didn't think to solder a few things well enough and everyone who has bought the 1521 is now dealing with static noise. During the first year I had this laptop, I sent it in twice and they pretty much just cleaned the fan without addressing the static issue. They may have replaced the sound card with a refurbished one, but if the basic design is at fault, this doesn't change anything and indeed it hasn't.

I won't buy a Dell again. It's just not cost effective having to deal with such problems every single day; I suffer too much of a drop in productivity. Right now I'm looking into a Sager which costs nearly $1K, but of which there are nothing but accolades in regards to its performance and reliability. I do believe that laptop makers can make a quality $400 laptop and still make profit; Dell just doesn't want to. And when they drop the ball, they don't admit it. In fact, it's like they've dropped the ball, it got punctured by a couple of stray nails, and then run over by an 18-wheeler car, and then they sell you the ball and tell you it's brand new and of great quality and value. When you find out the truth and ask them to fix it, they pretend like nothing is wrong.

Dell, you had your chance. You blew it.

Getting nothing but Linda Kelly's answering machine

I recently filed a complaint against Dell with the BBB asking for them to refund my $25 shipping fee. I tried calling one of them, and was told that he had switched departments. I called the other, and was told she was on break. I tried again this morning, at 9 AM, when they would not be on break, and was told by the customer representative that they cannot put me in contact with members of the escalation team, but that they would call me back. Just WTF is going on?!

9:45 AM
Called the Global Escalation Team phone # that was given to me again and was again transferred to just regular customer service

Rupiner (#887063) told me that she could not connect me with the escalation team even though their e-mail said they work from 8-5 PM M-F. She gave me the regular "they will call you back in 24 hours" nonsense. No one at the escalation team has responded to my e-mails or the messages that I have previously been able to leave (up until yesterday, I was able to leave messages with the secretary at the escalation team office)

9:58 AM
Finally managed to get through to the same Global Escalation Team secretary that I had been talking to all last week trying to get in contact with members of the team. Karthik (#145772) told me that both Reena Dominic and Azam Mohammed were not at their desks. Interestingly enough, although the secretary previously told me Azam Mohammed had switched departments, he apparently forgot what he had told me last time, and tried to page Azam. No luck.

Inspiron 1521 finally arrives after 5 weeks; 2nd reboot fails

My Inspiron 1521 finally arrived after 5 weeks of stalling by Dell last night. I will draft a letter to the BBB later in the day and continue to post the results of this ongoing saga of "Dell Hell" here.

Labor date update on my Inspiron 1521 order

Well, the customer center is not open on Labor Day Weekend, but sales chat is. I guess Dell needs to keep selling to new customers, but feels no need to service existing clients during the holidays. Although we anticipated being able to ship your order sooner, we are experiencing an unexpected delay and have adjusted the estimated ship date as reflected below (see Revised Estimated Ship Date). We value your business and appreciate your patience.

Now my ship date had been moved back to 8/27/2008.

I used Dell chat again and "BE_RR_Rep_Noelle" could tell me nothing except that my ship date was estimated at 8/27/2008. I told him that I did not pay $25 in shipping so they could deliver it to me 2 weeks later. I asked him to refund me the $25 that I paid but to continue to producing and shipping the 1521 to me. He said that Customer Service at 1-800-624-9897 could help me with this. He said that they could give me a case number that Noelle could then help me with.

I called the Customer Service number and spoke with Dell Representative Gaurab (employee number: 137941) and he told me that "Due to the nature of Dell's business, we cannot give you exact production or shipping times, those are just estimates." I asked him what was holding up the process and he said he couldn't answer that. When I asked him to take $25 off my order price because it was being seriously delayed, he said he could not do that, and replied in an annoyed voice: "If you don't like it, you can cancel your order." Gaurab did not give me a case number, and I had to pointedly ask him for his employee number before I could even get that.

I continued to contact Dell Chat, whose agents provided me with no answers. I also clicked on the link to check my order status everyday, and was surprised to see on 8/26/2008 that they had added some information to my account telling me that if I did not approve of "all future delays," my order would be automatically canceled. I received no e-mail warning of an automatic cancelation. Since I had already put in so much time customizing my laptop and speaking to all these Dell representatives, I grudgingly pressed the "I agree" button agreeing to all future delays.

Right after that, my order was delayed for the 3rd time to 9/4/2008. I contacted Dell Sales Chat on 8/27/2008 and spoke with "BE_RR_Rep_Christopher_W:"

10:27:23 AM Agent BE_RR_Rep_Christopher_W
not sure.. you can call customer service do you want that number?
10:27:59 AM Customer ME
I called them before, they didn't provide any details.
10:28:09 AM Customer ME
The shipment has been delayed 3 times, surely you must know the reason?
10:30:38 AM Agent BE_RR_Rep_Christopher_W
i do not... unless it is the AMD processor?

He hinted that the AMD processor was on backorder, and I asked for more info, and then he simply dropped the connection. Thanks, Christopher, for nothing.

I talked to some friends that have had many experiences buying corporate from Dell, and they told me that AMD processors were probably the culprit. So I contacted Sheila at Dell Chat this time:

10:42:49 AM Customer ME
Initial Question/Comment: ME@gmail.com
10:42:54 AM System System
You are now being connected to an agent. So Dell gave me the option to build an AMD64 Inspiron 1521, but decided that it didn't want to make them anymore, but was happy to take my money anyways, and then wants to cancel it?! I honestly do not know what kind of 3-ring circus they are running.

At present, I'm hoping to receive my notebook by the middle or end of October 2008. I will post blog updates here everyday detailing my chat and telephone conversations with these wonderful & helpful (I'm being facetious) people.

I remember when Dell used to be respected for their service and quality. I honestly don't know what happens to that. IF I receive my Dell Inspiron 1521 from Dell.com, it will be my last order EVER with this company. They don't respect their customers and would rather put up roadblocks to problem resolution because it saves them a few bucks. In this economy, companies cannot thrive on such a lack of service. From now on, I'll be buying Acer, Asus, or Gateway. Those Taiwanese companies know how to make a mean laptop and they charge less for it.
